El 5 de abril de 1948, el Estado de Washington aprueba los estatutos del Club Royal Esquire. El Club fue organizado por cinco jóvenes caballeros que no encontraban en la ciudad de Seattle ningún lugar cordial donde los hombres de raza negra pudieran socializar. Ellos eran Doyle Bonner, Frederick Bowmar, William Childress, Freddie Ray y Joe West.
