El sábado 22 de noviembre de 1947 una tienda de excedentes de guerra llamada Chubby & Tubby (3333 Rainier Avenue S) celebra su Gran Inauguración en Seattle. El negocio –ubicado inicialmente en un grupo de barracas metálicas militares Quonset en un lote de esquina (donde antes funcionaba una estación de gasolina Signal) en el vecindario Rainier Valley de Seattle– de hecho había estado abierto desde hacía unas cinco semanas. Pero aparentemente, los dos corpulentos propietarios –Woodrow ("Woody") "Tubby" Auge (fallec. 1989) e Irvin "Chubby" Frese (fallec. 1997)– tenían todavía algunos asuntos organizativos que arreglar antes de oficializar las cosas: de hecho, durante esas primeras cinco semanas la compañía se llamó en realidad "Tubby & Chubby."
